TYPES OF BEAMS & TYPES OF LOADINGS

Beam:-A structural member which is acted upon by a system of external loads at right angles to its axis is known as beam.

BEAM

LOADING:-It is a type of weight put on the beam which causes the beam to deflect or bend in shape.

LOADING

TYPES OF BEAMS:-There are five types of beams as under:-

1.Cantilever Beam:-A cantilever beam is one whose one end is fixed and the other end carries a point or concentrated load.

                              2. Simply Supported Beam:-A simply supported beam is one which carries two reaction forces at its two ends & a point load at its mid-point.

3.Overhanging Beam:-It is a type of simply supported beam which overhangs from its supports. An overhanging beam may overhang on one side only or on both sides of the supports.

                               4. Rigidly Fixed Or Built-In-Beam:-It is a type of beam in which both ends are fixed and carries a point load at its centre.

                             5. Continuous Beam:-It is a type of overhanging beam which consists of a numerous reaction forces and point loads.

TYPES OF LOADINGS:-A beam may be subjected to either or in combination of the following types of loads:-

1.Concentrated Or Point Load:-It is a type of load which acts at the centre of the beam as shown below:-

                                  2. Uniformly Distributed Load:-It is a type of load which is distributed uniformly over the entire length of the beam.

                                      3. Uniformly Varying Load:-These are the loads varying uniformly from zero to a particular value and spread over a certain length of the beam.Such load is also called triangular load.

ENGLISH BOND & FLEMISH BOND

                                                     ENGLISH BOND

This bond consists of alternate course of headers & stretches. In this arrangement, vertical joints in the header courses come over each other & the vertical joints in the stretcher course are also in the same line.

                                                      FLEMISH BOND

In this arrangement of bonding brick work, each course consists of alternate headers & stretchers. The alternate headers of each course are centered over the stretchers in the course.Every alternate course starts with a header at the corner.

HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

  • Civil Engineering came into existence in 18th century in France. An Englishman,John Smeaton was the first proclaimed civil engineeer in 1761.
  • First Degree Programme in civil engineering was started by 'State College(UK)' in 1886.John Wesley Gunn of  Lexington got the first civil engineering degree from the A & M College in 1890.
  • Civil Engineering construction works were not new ,they had started from the times of  pyramid construction in Egypt, stupas in ancient Sri Lanka And Mesopotamian Civilization.
  • Archimedes gave the principle of 'Buoyancy' related to Civil Engineering works which nowadays became a part of the civil engineering syllabus.

WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING?

Civil Engineering as the term itself says was developed by a series of talented civilians involved in the work of construction, masonries and all about development of the roads work.Civil Engineering is used to be the oldest of all engineering branches after the invent of so called military engineering. At the ancient times, when there was no such education persisted, people used to do the work of construction, building roads, homes made of wood were all part of a engineering process.Today the term civil engineering widespread into its full extent having all availaible resources with the advancement of new technologies.
